2010-11 Summary

In its second year of existence, real progress is taking hold on many fronts: the ETLG workgroups now formed have begun to meet and provide valuable reports and feedback. And, the system wide OIPP initiative has sparked many discussions on our campuses concerning online instruction and topics related to hybrid learning. While the ongoing budget challenges have led to positive cross-campus discussions on consolidation, collaboration, and efficiencies, attrition has also taken its toll on our departments, resulting in increased workloads for those of our staff who remain. This in turn has impacted the amount of time and attention our staff can devote to systemwide analysis and planning.

Liz Gibson's excellent leadership will be greatly missed as she steps down from UCD and as Chair of the ETLG. Jim Phillips will step in as Chair and Mara Hancock as Vice Chair.

2011 ETLG Updates and Recommendations

OIPP
ITLC Action Required: None / Information Only. ITLC may wish to consider the creation of incentives for LMS clusters (Moodle / Sakai / Blackboard) to engage in deeper collaborative endeavors.

Initial Copyright Recommendations, Background, and Feedback Received
ITLC Action Required: Review and Provide Feedback to ETLG. Escalate to OGC or UC Wide Copyright Working Group. If no further action is taken, provide ETLG with a provisional position on copyright.

Online Survey - UC Student Attitudes Towards Online Learning
ITLC Action Required: None / Information Only.

Online Course Evaluations
ITLC Action Required: None / Information Only.

Virtual Labs
ITLC Action Required: Request for seed funding. Possible Recommendation: The ETLG recommends developing or participating in a systemwide provision of v-labs consisting of common applications that are available on all of our campuses (with licensing agreements that would lend themselves to this kind of widespread use). This would allow us to do some experimenting (e.g., latency). If the gateway were the OIPP, then this may solve some problems for distance education as well. Recommend hosting at SDSCC.

Pedagogical Issues
ITLC Action Required: None / Information Only. Question: Should the ETLG repeat this effort in the coming year? Should we broaden conversations to have different people from each campus interact?

Possible Items for next year:

  • Accessibility
  • Outreach to Library groups
  • Continued collaboration with Center for Teaching and Learning Directors
  • No labels
