ITLC Middleware Project

Project Description:

During the past decade the University of California has been challenged to better leverage its information technology resources in support of effective and efficient academic and business operations.  This challenge has included a call to avoid, whenever possible, the replication of software, systems, and personnel across campuses to (more or less) address the same operational needs.  Various approaches have been considered and indeed utilized to assist UC is reaching these objectives.  These approaches include utilizing open source and community source software as well simply sharing and repurposing software between campuses.  A fundamental challenge to the approaches adopted so far is that, in general, they fail to address the operational differences and cultures between campuses; in other words, at UC, "one size does not fit all".  Therefore, by and large, the success of these efforts have been somewhat limited. A common middleware thus provides UC an opportunity for one campus to provide services to other campuses in a far more effective fashion than open source / community source solutions or sharing of source code.

The goals specific to this project are:  A Pilot/Proof of concept operationalization of common UC Middleware and a White Paper with recommendation for common UC Middleware standards going forward.
