What's Our Final Decision?  Eduroam or Federated Captive Portal

  • Eduroam specifies AES encryption, and not all campuses' WAPs support it.  Berkeley has 150-200 WAPs that do not support AES, and half of UCSC's do not.
  • Consensus achieved! After some arm twisting, the group agreed that eduroam is our best option, although it will cause difficulties for some campuses. Some campuses may choose to also implement a federated captive portal. The campuses with Cisco captive portals will lobby as a body for Shibboleth support.
  • We polled the participating campuses as to whether they would be able to implement eduroam within the next 12 months.  All would want to consult others at their campuses before making a firm commitment, but the quick responses were:

Campus

Quick Estimate

UCB

Can implement eduroam within the next 12 months for the portions of the campuses with WAPs that support it.

UCD

Plan to implement by the end of 2010 for centrally-managed portions of the campus.

UCI

Can implement eduroam within the next 12 months for the portions of the campuses with WAPs that support it.

UCLA

Testing now. Plan to implement by the end of 2010 for centrally-managed portions of the campus.

UCR

Can implement eduroam within the next 12 months for the portions of the campuses with WAPs that support it.

UCSD

Can implement campus-wide within the next 12 months.

UCSC

Can implement eduroam within the next 12 months for the portions of the campuses with WAPs that support it.

Next Steps

  • David Walker will draft a report to the UCTrust Work Group and CPG.  It will be reviewed via electronic mail and sent prior to our next conference call.
  • We will have our next call in a couple of weeks to discuss what comes next.  We will not need further calls to coordinate the mechanics of each campus joining eduroam, but we'll want to stay in contact, particularly with respecthow we will interact with eduroam and issues we'd like to see eduroam address.
  • We'll switch to monthly calls after our next call.
