Review of Radius's Ability to Send Attributes
- The group discussed Erik Klavon's review of Radius and eduRoam's ability to send attributes about the guest user.
- Erik suggested that establishing a well-known electronic mail address for each site could help with some of our issues.
Review of the Comparison of Alternative Federated Wireless Authentication Strategies
- The group discussed Comparison of Alternative Federated Wireless Authentication Strategies.
- EduRoam does provide some level information about guests, albeit minimal.
- A captive portal could be used in conjunction with 802.1x to present hosts' policies.
- We took a straw poll to get a sense of how UC campuses are thinking about the alternatives. No guarantees were given or expected that these are "official" opinions of the campuses, just opinions/guesses of the meeting participants at the time of the meeting.
- UCSD: eduRoam and captive portal
- UCLA: eduRoam and whatever this group decides
- UCD: eduRoam and whatever this group decides
- UCSC: eduRoam and captive portal
- UCB: eduRoam eventually, but would need some issues addressed; willing to do captive portal, although there may be workload issues to resolve
- UCR: captive portal and whatever this group decides
Next Steps
- David Walker will draft a statement of direction for review by the CPG and the UCTrust Work Group.
- Most campuses are planning to join eduRoam, but we have issues with its relative lack of ability to communicate with guests and to obtain basic contact information about them.
- All campuses are willing to implement the captive portal strategy that this group has outlined. It will require resources to implement, however.
