Future Agenda Items

  1. Match UC Trust provisions with ILTI enrollment hub options and identify alignment and gaps

Proposed Topics for the Task Force

These topics were taken from the initial meeting of the task force on October 22, 2013.

  • Enrollment hub: Grades, roster
  • System wide LMS integration
  • Mobile intersection with LMS
  • Initiatives for non-matriculated students
    • How do IMS specs line up with these students?
    • Do the specs need modification to address their needs?
  • What has been adopted regarding course standards outside of undergraduate education and who conforms to them?
    • K-12? Medical schools?
  • What is the nature of UC's partnership with IMS?
  • Data types and alternate approaches
  • Accessibility

ILTI inter-campus course integration

  • IMS Global’s work on LTI is also important for the ILTI passing for grades between LMS’ (Rose)
  • We may need some representation from Extension and transferring credits from CSU system to UC (Rose)
  • We should concider some communication protocols between Rob Abel and UC system (internally vs. partnership) (Jim Davis)

Individual Campus Efforts with IMS

CampusSummary of Partnership with IMSDescription/NotesDocumentation
UCI
  • Investigating if distance learning courses regularly utilize IMS standards in Moodle at UCI Extension
  • Exploring integrating LTI to connect with partner tool providers within Electronic Educational Environment (EEE), UCI's proprietary LMS

UCLA

We have had some communication with Colin Smythe (IMS Global) with regard to the Outcomes service in inform upgrade of homegrown Grade book app and how it might work with Moodle

UCLA's Moodle instance (CCLE) allows faculty to import IMS Content Packages (using the Common Cartridge standard).  In addition, CCLE allows the use of LTI Tools such as Piazza using the External Tools Activity.

  • UCLA is working with IMS Global to establish the Community App Sharing Architecture (CASA) initiative:  http://appsharing.github.io/casa-protocol/
  • UCLA is interested in learning more about the CALIPER Learning Analytic Interoperability Standard to combine analytic data from LTI tools and disparate LMS systems

UCOE
  • Work with vendors and campus representatives to use LTI (largely Canvas, also Macmillan for ebooks)
  • Test integrations to make sure they are working
  • Some work with common cartridge, receiving material as well as producing it

UCD
  • Sakai integration with tools (primarily VoiceThread and Piazza)
  • Currently exploring new LMSes and putting emphasis on LMSes that integrate well with third party tools
  • Some problems using common cartridge imports, but may be on Sakai side

UCSD
  • Consumer of LTI for tools like Piazza
  • Will soon be working with LTI API for TurnItIn, which is phasing out individual LMS plugins

UCB
  • Previous use and continued tracking of Common Cartridge as a means for migration and archiving of course sites. Common Cartridge is supported by both of our learning management systems: Sakai CLE and Instructure Canvas.
  • Currently using LTI as means for integrating OpenCast Matterhorn player into our Instructure Canvas LMS instance. LTI will be the main way of intergrating external tools in this environment.
  • Tracking the latest work of the Learning Information Services APMG and Course Planning and Scheduling group, especially as it leads to new opportunities for course and event scheduling systems to interact.
  • Also have encountered limitations in Sakai CLE's implementation of Common Cartridge.
